Archive for June, 2006

I'm still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel with regards to work. I'd hoped to have cleared my towering pile before I went on holiday, then I'd hoped to have it clear for the start of June. My clients seemed to have dragged their feet over their sites, or keep changing their minds creating more work for me. Today I had a call off someone I was doing some coding for who had expected to call today with the details of the work and have it done for them by tomorrow. After 6 weeks of not hearing from them they expect me to drop everything!

I decided after this call that I have had enough this year. I have about 2-3 months worth of work still to do and then I want to devote about 25-30 hours a week to my contract job, that will easily cover my outgoings and still give me some savings, plus give me a lot more spare time to catch up with my reading and own sites. So now I've just got to say No!! Of course I'll still look after existing clients with little touch ups, tweaks and updates. And if Dave can take care of the job then that's fine by me. I may take the odd job on and source it out, just to keep the odd client happy, but mainly I just want to be left alone.

Call it complaining if you want, it's not. I'm so happy and amazed that I've made a success of my business, but I'm tired, stressed and pretty worn out. So now I just have to say no and not be weak and give in. This could possibly be a hard job for me!

What a mix eh. Well a good friend of mine, Martin, has decided to do away with his own blog as he has two set up on sites of his that pretty much cover his tastes. The first is his London and Politics Blog on his MayorWatch Site. If you have any interest in Politics then this is a good blog to bookmark. His other is his Doctor Who blog on his Unit News web site. I'm not sure if it'll be solely Doctor Who stuff or perhaps may include other Cult TV postings.

Still the man can write and write well, so well worth a visit :)

After the success of last weeks online grocery shop I decided last night to do enough shopping for 2 weeks which would then mean we could just pop out to pick up the fruit and salad/veg we wanted. So again, a quick run over the site, made much easier as I could reorder stuff that I'd already ordered last week which cut my searching down. I then took a 'wander' through the special offers and finest foods, picked up a couple of extra bits totalling £90 for the lot – a major improvement on our usual £100+ per week shops, and the bonus was that we could have it delivered today for a pound less than on Friday!

So today it came, and unfortunately they missed out one item – Dave's Tiger beer. But one quick phone call later and they refunded the missing item for us. So I'm still impressed with Tesco. We'll probably try out Sainsburys at some point just to see how well they fare or perhaps to get some different foods, but overall this home delivery lark is so time saving and definitely the way to save on spending!

Forget Top Day for Adsense last week, yesterday we hit over $8 which pushed us over the $100 mark for the month, with 2 days still remaining. Checking the figures before shutting down, around 11pm, showed us on $5 yesterday, so it seems that our site is also beginning to appeal to (presumably) non UK visitors, either the US or perhaps the early morning Far East and Australia. I realise the visitors are also shooting up, over 50% since the start of the month, but the CPC is also averaging better – maybe the UK adverts don't pay as much as the US adverts, which wouldn't suprise me as I'm sure there are more US companies paying out higher amounts in advertising. Still this means a payment this month and a payment next month! All from one site too. Now if only I could find a few other sites that could get similar amounts of visitors too!

I've been adding some more photos to Flickr, running through the hundreds I have on my computer. I've already hit the limitations of Flickr however. The 20mb per month upload limit I could cope with but only being allowed 3 sets has annoyed me as I'd rather be able to organise my photos a lot more. Of course this is with the free account, but I have no intentions of paying £25 a year when I could sit down for a day and recode my photo gallery to offer the same system with no limitations at all.

Still, for the time being it can hold my photos, despite the little organisation on them!
