I've been using HitTail on this site to review my search hits after reading about the site on Seo Scoop. In a nutshell the site gives you some javascript to add to each page, and it tracks your incoming visitors (for visitor tracking try CountMeCounter). You get to see where people came from and if they came from a search engine (the main point of this software) it tells you which engine and which page they clicked on. The idea is that it cuts down the workload of working out phrases that you're ranking for but not fantastically, as these are the phrases you could work on.

Personally I just wanted to try it out (as I'm a nosey sod), and see what it gave. This blog doesn't get a great deal of search engine visitors as most visitors are using feed readers or just returning, plus I've not posted much on this particular blog due to my heavy workload and also spending more time posting on my AIS/SEO blog (and the others too to be honest!). However, this HitTail tool does tell me what people are search on, who DO use search engines, be it blog or normal searches, and from my point of view it gives me a quick idea of what questions people are asking – and also what answers they're not getting from my site.

Perhaps once I can start to spend more time blogging then the visitors will rise and I'll use the tool properly, as it suggests what phrases you should optimise for, without you having to trawl through the results yourself. However for now it's another tool which is a must when it comes to pure SEO and Search Engine Rankings / Hits.

Oh it's free too ;)

Thanks so much for the mention, Sarah. We've taken some time to develop a new demo to help people spread the HitTailing word. http://www.hittail.com/demo/

No worries Mike :) It's definitely a handy tool and it gives better and clearer documented information on search engine visitors, which at the end of the day is a major way to get new visitors.

I'm not sure if my blog was a good place to test this on as I've had suggestions such as
    next generation gym membership prices
fried lemon sole with skin (which you can find at DietSpot!)
mx records 11 (of which I haven't got a clue)

I know why some of the results are showing, as I used to have personal posts on this blog up until about a month ago, other results are beyond me! I think I'll start to put this onto more targetted sites of mine, to hopefully get more targetted suggestions.
