Halfway Through – What's been done?
Mon, 17 July, 2006 – 2:13 pm
It's 2 weeks to August. That's quite scary when you realise 7 months of the year have passed exceptionally quick! This time last year I was just working a couple of days a week and taking it easy the rest of the time, doing the odd job here and there for clients. This year it's been non-stop although I'm finally down to just 4 sites on the go, plus work.nnSo what have I been up to this month? Well I got my first (and probably only) RSSGM site up. Typical story, spare domain, list of keywords, few additional product links – hey presto. I must admit RSSGM sites are not so bad to be fair. Okay they have a load of keywords in designed to pull in search visitors, however it's not just pages of links but actual content from new feeds. Anyhow, I'm not about to build a network, I just wanted to get some use off a domain and see how well it fared. So far it's been only for about 10 days and was fully indexed by Google (and receiving visitors) after a week. Hopefully it will target the US market more so I'm hoping for better sales of digital downloads. I've also got another two niches sites in the works. They're both already indexed but need optimising slight working on. I'm hoping to get the first of these redone this week and will hopefully see a rise in visitors with any luck.nnI've also been tinkering with the adsense on my Diet Blog. Despite a rise in visitors there were no clicks coming in since I changed the theme, and whilst I realise a big 4 ad box at the top of the page is the best way to get clicks, I didn't want to put this on the front page as it makes the site appear ugly and clearly there for advertising. Trouble with the amount of splogs around (spam blogs), it's hard to make a real blog with real content stand out if it's carrying adsense on. However I rejigged the internal pages which are the ones the search engine visitors land on (mainly the recipes) and I've had a few clicks since doing so. I'm also finally seeing my site back up to rankings for various recipes which I'm happy with as these had dropped severely with the whole Google Big Daddy rollout.nnI've finally made a start on planning the shopping cart for the Tattoo site too. This I'm hoping will make purchasing the Tattoo designs more appealing to the bulk of the UK visitors. Last month's surge of visitors seems to have dropped off back to average this month, so adsense is back down to average too (although CPC is up 50%!), so I'm hoping to get the site making money off product sales instead. Hopefully this will be finished by the end of the month.

Sarah, did you implement any of the upgrades to RSSGM posted in the RSSGM Forum or just use a vanilla version?nI am Beta testing a Mass Installer for RSSGM at the moment that looks very promising

No I just used v1.35 as v1.4 didn't want to work for me. I've not looked in the forum at all (didn't know there was one to be honest!).nnI always said I didn't really want to churn out portal site after portal site. To be honest I think a good method is, use a site generator, if the site does get popular then put some time and effort into it to make it a white hat site, a decent resource for your visitors.nnBut if I can make a few $$$ off some spare domains then the odd one here and there will still let me sleep easy at night

I don't like RSSGM, there are many better options out there.
