10 Year Anniversary

Yep it's my 10 year anniversary of subscribing to .net Magazine. I remember buying issue 23 (I think) back in July/August 1996 time. I bought it solely for the CD which had a signup to Planet Internet ISP. I'd just got a brand new 28.8kbps modem put into my high speed P60 desktop. I got Planet Internet on and suddenly my world opened up and my credit card suffered!

Okay not totally true, I'd been using the internet, mainly telnetting to a BBS (bulletin board system) to chat to other students around the country, but having it at home meant I could waste even more time chatting and working on my awesome web site!! (You can detect the sarcasm I hope). Yes my credit card suffered. I still have the bills somewhere showing an average spend of £50 a week. £12 I think for the subscription which then gave 3 hours free, and then £2.95 per hour. Oh don't forget that didn't include the telephone fee calling an 0845 number. Geez people these days don't know how easy they got it! ;)

Anyhow, after reading issue 23 I decided to subscribe and what did I get a freebie? A whole 1/2 meg of webspace free!!! I can feel your jealousy! I actually never used it but the subscription was still worth it. A large part of my original learning was thanks to .net. I remember they did a case study of the Smirnoff site which was running frames at the time, so I then switched my site to frames and I was the talk of the town with my BBS crowd, as none of them knew how to do it! How times have changed.

So here's to 10 years of .net and learning, and essentially 10 years of solid internet use. 10 years ago I said I wanted to build web sites for a living – wow I actually followed something through!
