Finding a Good Domain

These days most of the good domains have gone. They're either in use or have a stack of advertising on them. It can be frustrating coming up with an idea only to find that you can't find a decent domain to go forward with it. Of course sometimes a whacky irrelevant address can work wonders. Flickr is a good example. Okay so it's similar to 'flicker' but who'd have thought a domain with a missing letter like that would still work? Delicious is another example, something you really wouldn't associate with a bookmarking site but as far as I'm aware was the first social bookmarking site out there.nnHowever, there are ways to find a domain along your lines of thinking, but instead of trying every version under the sun, why not let a free tool do the work for you instead? Domain Tools has a great free tool called Domain Suggestions. You simply type in the word or words you're looking to incorporate in the name and it will give you 20 suggestions and show which ones are available under each TLD and which are taken (it used to show pages but they clearly realised there was an opportunity to make some cash!). The names listed have all been registered using at least one of the TLDs in the past. This of course could be damaging to your new site so it's best to check out the domain at the Internet Archive to see if there were any previous sites on the domain and if so, what were they.nnIt's not a fantastic tool but when I get an idea for a website I tend to take a look on there and see what it throws up. Words or domains that I'd not thought of may appear and then can help me find a decent enough address.
