Advertising via Bookmarking Sites

We all know about Social Bookmarking. del.icio.us was one of the first and has proved to probably be the most popular. I opened up an account with them last year but after importing my bookmarks I didn't do much else with it. I wasn't too impressed with their AJAX as it often seemed to not work for me, and the tags weren't in any particular order. It looked a mess to me.nnYesterday Dave noticed someone had bookmarked one of his posts on there but couldn't find out how without bookmarking his own page as their search is simply for tags. It got me thinking about adding every page from my blog on there so that I could then see if it was also bookmarked by others (the only way I know how to see who else has bookmarked it). I started just added the pages and giving the tag of the site name, but then I realised why not give it a proper tag or tags that people may search on. Afterall, surely people are searching the tags on del.icio.us else why have the search? I realise my pages are never going to hit the front page or possibly be in the first page of the tag results (it seems to sort by popularity), however it was worth a shot.nnSo I added around 50 pages, mainly my pages on PHP and WordPress from my Tech blog. A little experiment to see if it pulled any visitors in. After just checking my live stats at WordPress.com I can see that already at least 4 people have searched on del.icio.us for PHP and come to my site. They came from pages 17, 23 an 24 so clearly no where near the top of the results but still pulling in a few visitors, a result I'm quite impressed to have happened so quickly.nnWhether it'll die down or not who knows, and whether this is old news to everyone else, who knows. I'm usually a little behind the world, I like it that way ;) nnIt may not be so good on non technical related pages, that's something I'll need to try on our other sites, but for now I'm quite happy with my few results so far.nnOh and del.icio.us (god I hate that spelling!) now has tag bundles and allows you to organise your tags a lot better and neater. All we need now is a nice design :P

  1. This is a great idea. I've never thought of using Del.icio.us this way, but then I’m usually a little behind the world too!

  2. I must admit I forget to bookmark my posts as I write them, so on a weekend I'll sit and run through them all, tagging each one. It's certainly worth it if you have the right subject that people are looking for. :) nnThanks for stopping by.
