We all like to offer our opinion. It's human nature ;) However the more blogs you read, the more comments you make, and then the inevitable happens – the more chance you have of losing track of where you've left a comment!

I'm not one for making a comment and then ignoring any response it gets. I believe than a blog owner should try to ensure they at least acknowledge comments left by their visitors, and if the visitor's comment requires a response then the owner should give it one. So hoping and presuming that a blog owner will perhaps reply to my comment I do try to ensure I return to that particular post to check on the comments.

For the blogs I comment on frequently, I subscribe to the comment feed as well. Even if it's not advertised, if it's a WordPress site you can simply go to http://www.domain.com/comments/rss2/ and the comments feed should show up. This way you can track all the comments made, afterall whilst the post may not have sparked a comment from you, another person's comment or question may well do.

However I am starting to find that I'm losing track of posts I comment on. I've added a few new blogs to my reading list and whilst I may not comment often I still make the occassional comment. I guess I could add any post I comment on to Del.icio.us and then revisit them during the week. That's one option. I could always just bookmark them in a commented folder on my browser too. I have done this in the past with one or two.

So how do you remember where you've commented? Or do you really care?!

  • Andreas Gohr Comments:

I use co.mments.com to keep track of my comments and their replies through RSS. I blogged about different available services to track blog comments a while ago.

  • Si Philp Comments:

If I can I add the comment rss feed into netvibes where I have a dedicated "Comments" tab. Sometimes it's difficult though as trying to be part of the discussion on one blog/forum can be different mind set on another…. If that makes sense. Sounded right in my head lol

  • sara Comments:

I don't keep track unless I regularly return to that blog or they have a subscribe to comments plugin installed. I use this one:

    http://txfx.net/code/wordpress.....-comments/

  • Sarah Comments:

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Andreas, I've never heard of co.mments.com so I'll have to have a look at that plus check out your post :)

Si, I know what you mean, I do subscribe to a few comment feeds but when some have 20 comments you can really get lost!

Sara, I often see the subscribe to comments option however I always untick it as I can find myself receiving an email months down the line, and haven't worked out how to unsubscribe from the comments!

  • Sarah Comments:

However I've now added the Subscribe to Comments via Email, for anyone that so wishes to use it ;)

PS. Thanks to 'David' (whoever that may be!) for letting me know that the notify box was out of line in Firefox. Should all be fixed now :)

  • sara Comments:

Yay, I'm glad. it makes it easier to remember for me. Most emails that are sent out that use that plugin have the following at the bottom:

To manage your subscriptions or to block all notifications from this site, click the link below:

with a link to unsubscribe if you want.

  • Sarah Comments:

Yes I see the Manage Subscriptions link now! I guess I never saw it before so didn't realise it was there (or maybe not, depends on the plugin too I guess).

However it's there now so hope it's of use to you and others :)

  • goldfries Comments:

I'll say it really depends on what comment I posted.

For example, if it was just "Great post, I like it." then it would be pointless to keep track of.

However if it was something that might be worthy of a response like "No, I don't think anyone should get a Mac cos it sucks." then yeah. I'll probably check back.

I notice that you have this "Notify me of followup comments via e-mail". I suppose that's the one Sara posted? :)

I think I'm going to install it soon, after WP's latest patch that is.

  • Sarah Comments:

Oh definitely, there's no point checking back if you've just paid someone a compliment, although I tend to only comment if I've got something more to say than that (I'm not saying that's bad just posting that though ;) )

I just have the problem where I know I've maybe commented somewhere, but can't remember on what post or what I said!

And yes the Notify plugin was as per Sara's suggestion. Shame I can't simply see the subscriptions for every post on one page. I may have to write a little PHP hack for that ;)

  • Sarah Comments:

Oh no forget that, I just didn't look at things properly first time around and can see the Manage Subscriptions page tells me everything :D *blonde*

  • Witty Artist Comments:

For me it depends on the type of comment I leave. If I say "Thanks" or "Congrats" I don't make such a fuss of keeping track of it. Whereas the discussion is of greater interest, I submit the "Notify me of followup comments via e-mail".
