I agree. Yesterday I had an email off a company whose RSS feed I'd amended to strip out images from the content and get the URL of the image and place it elsewhere. It was working fine when I'd done it but wasn't 6 weeks later. After a quick look I saw the file had been edited, and thanks to Beyond Compare (software) I could find the one line (amongst 3700 of them) that had been edited and a pattern match literally destroyed.

I uploaded my previous version, thereby fixing it all again and pointed this out. Okay 5-10 minutes of my time, but they didn't even have the decency to say thank you despite it being their wannabe PHP developer who broke it. Next time, it'll be charged for.

It can be difficult to ask the client for additional fees for correcting problems they have created. To us it may be a simple fix and take seconds but this is worth a lot to the client (with a broken site) so we should really be charging them for these corrections.

Yeah we do the same now, obviously though I wasn't so on the ball a few years back when some of these sites were set up. Even then though, I'm just too soft to ask for payment when fixing a site even if it's not my fault. This is why I need a business manager!

I start by making a point in portfolio showcases that when the design was signed off to a client that the code was valid etc and that I cannot guarantee any content or changes that have happened since then.

It would be nice to exclusively have clients that understand the web and standards surrounding it but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon!

Jem, I know how you feel! That and having to make updates to table based, badly coded sites from time to time!
