There's a Baby on the Way!
Sun, 6 June, 2010 – 1:45 pm
Yes it's been pretty quiet around here. After a busy couple of months to start the year, plus a stressful time in March with a vigilante developer who didn't have a clue (long story…!), we then had the amazing news that I'm pregnant
Since then it's been a bit hard going for me as I've been going through a lot of the typical first trimester symptoms of tiredness, mild insomnia, morning sickness and worst of all, headaches.
However, it'll be worth it especially as on Tuesday we both got the first glimpse of our baby to be during a scan at hospital. An amazing moment for both of us, especially as it confirmed that the baby's heart was beating fine and confirmed our due date of mid December
I'm still suffering with a lot of headaches and lack of sleep, although I'm starting to get used to them a bit more now, but it does mean that most of my time is either spent in bed nursing the pain or getting work done. Hopefully, on average, this should only last another week or two and then I'll be into my second trimester and apparently have a new lease of energy, and be able to get on with enjoying being pregnant… I'm counting the days!
So a few plans for this site may have to take a back seat for a while now as I need to spend any computer time working, earning and saving as much as possible and teaching David some PHP as he'll be running the company at first, once the baby comes. However I will try to get some non personal posts up here when I can, especially with WordPress 3.0's release just around the corner. RC2 is already out so it's worth having a play with to get ready for the final version

That's great news, congratulations Sarah. Our first is on the way in less than six weeks!

Ahhhh, how did I miss this? Congratulations to you both! If you need anything (not that I'm trying to get rid of anything *cough* loads of baby clothes *cough* of course) give me a shout.
Fwiw, my headaches buggered off about 16-18w (although I had the sickness all the way through!)

Thanks both
Tom – congrats, hope it all goes well for you and the missus!
Jem – cheers for the offer. We got sent home from my brother's this weekend with shedloads of clothes, a crib, steriliser, mobiles, monitor etc. which is saving us a fortune already! I think we're okay for clothes providing it's a boy! Luckily a lot are more generic and some are too cute not to use regardless
Hoping my headaches go soon. That's the only thing left from the 1st trimester (am at 14w tomorrow) plus the waking up at night, but most the time I can get back to sleep so I can cope with that. Some days are good, some are still bad.
Cheers guys

I wish someone had given us a crib. Instead, we spent nearly £200 on cot and mattress, and ended up not using the bloody thing anyway. Makes a great shelf for my spare pillow and a book.
(Er, in case that sounds like we did away with the baby, it's actually because we ended up co-sleeping.)

Eek, that's an unfortunate expense. We've still got to buy mattresses for this crib plus a cradle my brother made which we're getting, so I just hope the baby settles in it. We have been fortunate with everything we're getting lent, as it's mind blowing how much things cost!
I realise now I should have started saving from about the age of 10 to prepare for a baby!

That is great news, I do hope things settle down soon for you too.
It's great to see a scan pic at last, bet you are staring at it now.
Love to you both from both of us.

So, how are you feeling Sarah? Got your 2nd trimester burst of energy yet?
By Jem on Mon, 19 July, 2010
Well… I'm sleeping better some of the time (not always though, bit frustrating). Not sure if I didn't pick up my burst of energy when I was last at the docs, as I don't seem to have it!
Headaches are getting less, but I'm still getting them, however they're not hormonal, instead I'm straining my neck in the night and of course paracetamol does nothing for that!
Just trying to cram in as much work as I can whilst I can focus 99%, and realising you need a degree to understand all things babyware such as pushchairs, infact carriers, isofix bases, etc. etc.!
At least the antenatal classes are booked

Can't help on the pushchair front because I don't use one!
We'll be at the stage of replacing our car seat soon. I want to stay rear-facing as long as possible (see http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/) which adds an extra level of difficulty because most mainstream shops (Mothercare etc) only do limited rear-facing seats :S
By Jem on Mon, 19 July, 2010
We're hoping to not need the pushchair too much for the first year by using a carrier, but getting something reasonably decent to last a few years is necessary, plus I can't see my Mum using the carrier!
It's just annoying how the car seat manufacturers are so inconsistent. We want an isofix base but half the seat manufacturers don't do them, or do one but only for certain seats of theirs! Tis just a pain!
I've not even thought about after the age of 1. Clearly even more to consider and deal with!

If you want advice on slings & carriers, shoot me a mail and I'll give you a rundown on what we use, why, etc
