Do I need a Car?

Further to my post I hate cars, I got my car back yesterday. Yes it was washed - most expensive carwash in Liverpool however at £1250! That's 2 new rear tyres, a new exhaust, 2 new suspension coils (at least it doesn't bounce so much now!), a full service, fluid changes etc. And it doesn't stop there as I need something fixing on the back lights as someone's bodged them up previously somehow (he explained it to me but all I heard was £30 each!). At least now everything on their check list has been ticked as green (ie. good). To be honest I think the only thing that's not been changed or fixed on the car are my windscreen wipers which were bought brand new before the MOT last week!!

I'm estimating I've just paid out about the equivalent of 50% of the car's worth. So I guess that will put back the idea of buying a second car until after January (when my tax bill is due :(). However at least the car is now all top notch again, handy as I'm off down south today to my parents as I have meetings in London on Monday. Still… bloody cars eh.

  3. It's mad how much cars cost compared to how much they cost to repair at times! However despite asking if I need one I know I do as the trip from home to London would be a lot longer and more hectic than a car drive!

  4. Dont you drive a Smart?

    Why was it so expensive?!?!

  5. The Smart is actually made by Mercedes and whilst cheap to buy and run the repairs and servicing usually have to be carried out by a Mercedes garage as very few other garages will touch them. And so suddenly all costs are pretty much doubled.

But to break down the price a little (as I don't know car repair prices so someone can probably confirm if it's expensive or not)
    A new exhaust - £290
    2 new suspension coils - £260
    2 new rear tyres - £160
60,000km Service included fluid changes (oil n stuff), spark plugs, air filter, oil filter and various other bits - £300+

    Those prices exclude VAT.

But yes, Smart = Mercedes = expensive. The car is controlled by 3 computers and thus limits who can deal with it. Add the £360 I paid out in May for 2 new front tyres and some lateral thingy that made the ABS light come on and that comes to just over £1600 for the year so far.

Insurance is due in 3 weeks :(
