Holiday in Italy
Thu, 9 August, 2007 – 5:14 pm
We're off to Italy in October so I've been looking on Expedia at places to stay. Originally we were going to drive there and around the country (including Sicily) but I've had a rethink and right now I just want a lazy holiday away! Am so tired and shattered I need a serious break.
Anyhow, so this is the plan
Fly Stansted to Palermo, Sicily. Stay there for 6 days.
I've had a look at hotels, mainly somewhere near the beach, must have wireless internet (in case of work emergencies) and somewhere we can relax and unwind. Ideally still within reasonable distance of a few places for sight seeing. The plane from here is either (very) early morning and gets in soon after 10am or arrives at 8pm. I was hoping on getting the later plane but if we end up far from the airport then I don't want to be travelling in a country I don't know (and don't speak the language) into the late night.
After checking the places on Trip Advisor too, I've narrowed down to one hotel but would love to know of suggestions from anyone else who's been there.
Take the train from Sicily to Naples. Stay there for 3-4 days
Again, found a couple of places in Naples but open to suggestions. Ideally not too far from public transport.
Train from Naples to Rome. Stay there for 4-5 days
Found a year old hotel on the edge of Rome, near the airport for home too. Sounds pretty good and very good value but still welcome to suggestions.
We may hire a car a couple of times, depends whether we can book on an excursion to get to the places we want to see (Mount Etna, Vesuvius, Pompeii). After what I've read I'm beginning to doubt about driving anywhere in Italy!!
All suggestions welcome ![]()

I'm heading over to Italy about a month after you for a slightly longer stay, but what I've found is quite a few apartments and small villas for rent for quite a bit cheaper and more private than a typical hotel. I am not a strong craiglist user, but I must say all of the people I've contacted on there seem legit and extremely accommodating. Just check out the vacation rentals under Sicily or Naples.
Unless of course you prefer hotels, then I have no real input here.

Hi Mike, thanks for the comment and hint on apartments. I doubt we'd be able to rent something for just 4 days at a time though, am guessing places like those need at least 7 days. However it's a good idea for a longer stay in one place.
Hope you enjoy your holiday

Ohhh… we may be going to Italy in late October, still undecided. We are also toying with with Spain or Portugal. 1 of the 3 though, for about a week!

I figured I'd update you. We are going to Venice for 5 days at the end of October. there is a school break here then and the cost to venice was about half the cost of going to portugal. We will have to save Portugal for the Spring!

Haha seems like you're following us. First Paris a couple of weeks after us and now Italy
We still need to get it booked. I keep forgetting at the end of the day! Hope your trip to Venice is good

I know, right?! Our vacations tend to fall around school vacations as I have a 3 year old and 6 year old. So You can set your calendar to Dec,Feb, and April.
Did you go to Prague last Jan or to Austria last march? That would be a riot!

No not been to Prague yet and it's been a while since I was in Austria!
