Roundup 02/03/08

What a week this week! Monday, pretty quiet, Tuesday? Oh an Earthquake hit at 1am (Wednesday really). I'd gone to bed earlier and had already been asleep when Dave came up about 12:45am. So I wasn't fully awake. Dave went off to the bathroom and I was laying down and felt the bed start to tremor quite a bit. I sat up, in the dark (scary enough!) and could still feel the shaking. Despite shouting out to Dave he never came (typical!!). Must admit, I was a bit scared as I was tired, confused and really not sure what was happening. I stood up and couldn't feel anything then so actually wondered if I'd been dreaming. I got Dave out the bathroom and he said I must have been dreaming as he'd not felt a thing.

Next morning, first stop was the BBC website and lo and behold, an Earthquake had hit! It's so surreal as it's just not something that happens in the UK. Thankfully no one was killed and I think just one injury happened. We live about 3-4 hours drive from where the quake actually happened (epicentre?) so were just on the edge of the tremor. It was quite strange that I felt it yet Dave, who was standing up (cleaning his teeth, not going to the loo!), didn't feel a thing.

Wednesday we headed off to Cardiff, down to stay with my friend Jane in her mansion of a house in the Welsh valleys. Thursday I had meetings at the office of my contract job, chatting about some future work, working out some cost cutting measures. Friday I was back in the office teaching a few people how to update their websites, currently powered by WordPress. For people who are not very internet savvy they all seemed pretty impressed with the ease of WordPress, and quite motivated to get on with updated and adding to their sites. Just goes to show how robust WordPress really is.

On Saturday there was a party at Jane's for her boyfriend's birthday. So plenty of sandwich making followed by homemade Mojitos! We had a great evening, catching up with a few friends and drinking plenty in the process! Today we drove back home. Thankfully the rain held off and the sun even put in an appearance, which made the scenic route through the countryside all the more better.

  2. LOL @ shouting at Dave. So you've got a fella who occasionally goes deaf too, huh? ;) Ah well, good job they're calm in a crisis tho' eh?

Sounds like the earthquake was scary down where you are. I was stood in the kitchen just before 1am, waiting for the kettle to boil so I could make myself a cuppa. I felt a slight shudder of the house…but only *very* slight. I actually put it down to the wind as it had been pretty windy for days here. Then I came to the computer to sleep it for the night when I noticed a bunch of my Twitter friends in Manchester, Liverpool and Nottingham say that they'd been woken up by violent shaking. Wasn't until then and seeing it breaking news on SKY News that I realised that house shudder must have been the quake. Quite a lot of people on Tyneside did feel it quite bad, according to the e-mails coming in to the local news station. Glad I didn't feel it strong - I was in the house alone at the time!

  3. Selective hearing, I think it's in the Man's make-up!

I think things were just a bit more scary as I didn't understand what was going on and it was a bit dark. Gotta say, I wouldn't have been very comfortable being alone!

I guess the strength felt is/was down to what was or wasn't absorbed by the house and foundations. Clearly our house isn't that sturdy!
