After noticing my Top Commentators list being hijacked I decided to alter the original Show Top Commentators plugin to create the list by the commentator's email address as names are not a unique method, and they're easily forged details.

Everything else is the same and instructions for use are on the original plugin's site.

Download Top Commentators Plugin.

hey thanx for the updates mate this will surely help stop hijacking of top comment and the deserving person will get his reward for commenting on blog post

  • Sarah Comments:

    No problem Sunil :)

  • Jacques Seoman Comments:

My name got hijacked on another blog, but as soon as I posted a comment, still under the same same, the link from the Top Commentator bar reverted back to my URL. Sneaky!

  • John Comments:

Just a thank you for the 'Top Commentators' plugin. I haven't fully configured it yet but it's easy to work with.

  • Sarah Comments:

Hi John, I didn't create the original just fixed a couple of flaws in it. Still, it's a good plugin regardless :)

I know this is an older post, but I wanted to say thank you very much for this update – I was using the other version and found some links hijacked today. I also posted about it and provided a link here for other people to find.

    • Sarah Comments:

No problem. I noticed you used to use the widget. I'd give the widget developer a nudge and get them to update/fix the plugin as I think the original has been fixed now (but I could be wrong!). Cheers for the post mention :)

  • Jacob Comments:

I will try this on my blog as well

  • Malcom Comments:

Hi Sarah, thanks for the update. What would happen though if someone guess your emaila address, I suppose its a good idea to use a non obvious one, cheers MAl

    • Sarah Comments:

No problem. In regards to your email, yes that's possibly but it's unlikely that a list hijacker is going to know the top commentator's emails unless it's their name at their domain. My own, for example, isn't :)

  • John Willis Comments:

Nice update, i like your site, and thanks for rewarding those who comment often!

Odd you found that. I was checking the Google Analytics search terms and found the phrase allintext: "top commentators" "powered by wordpress "

So, someone is searching out there for the references. I'm assuming the powered by wordpress is an indication to hijack some of the more unused sites.

    Hi all,
I'm not sure about any of you but I only found out about this plugin by mistake. Its one of them little rare golden nuggets that you may come accross when surfing the net.

  • marcus ollison Comments:

thanks alot , was not aware of this plug in. I was unaware of people's hijacking of comments.

  • Oakland Web Design Comments:

Is nothing sacred anymore. Seems like everything is open game for being hijacked.

Thank you for posting this because I was using the older version too.
